Can't hear a WhatsApp voice note? Here's what's actually wrong

If one WhatsApp voice note is quiet but everything else on your phone sounds normal, the file is probably fine and your phone is playing it through the earpiece instead of the loudspeaker. That takes two seconds to rule out: hold the phone at arm's length, away from your face, and press play again. If it suddenly gets loud, the proximity sensor was doing exactly what it's designed to do. If it's still faint at full media volume with the phone flat on a table, the recording itself is quiet, and that's a file problem you fix by boosting the audio, not by changing a setting. Those two cases need completely different fixes, so here's both.

The earpiece trap (check this first)

Your phone has two speakers: the loud one at the bottom and the tiny one at the top you hold to your ear on calls. WhatsApp routes voice notes to the ear speaker when the proximity sensor is covered, so the person next to you can't hear your messages. Useful. Also the reason half the internet thinks WhatsApp audio is broken.

The sensor sits near the top of the screen, next to the front camera. It gets covered by:

  • Holding the phone at reading distance to tap play, then bringing it closer
  • A thick case or a screen protector with a misaligned cutout
  • A greasy smudge or dust right over the sensor window
  • Playing with the phone face-down on a desk

Test it properly: start the note, then hold the phone flat in your palm with nothing over the top bezel. Loud? That was it. Wipe the top of the screen with a dry cloth and check whether the case overlaps the sensor. Once a note has switched to the earpiece mid-playback, it usually stays there until you stop it and start again with the phone away from your face.

Media volume, not ring volume

Android keeps separate volume streams for ring, media, alarm, call and notification, and the physical buttons adjust whichever one is active. Press them while nothing is playing and you're usually moving the ringer. The media level stays wherever it was.

The fix: start the voice note and press volume up while it's playing. Now you're moving the media stream. Or open the volume panel, expand it with the chevron or the three dots, and drag the Media slider specifically. iPhone has a milder version of the same trap, where the side buttons move the ringer until audio is playing, unless you've turned on "Change with Buttons" in Sounds & Haptics.

Bluetooth and a blocked speaker grille

If your earbuds are in a pocket, in their case, or sitting in a drawer still connected, the voice note is playing into them at full volume and you're hearing whatever leaks out. Check the output route before you blame WhatsApp. Cars are the worst offender, because the phone reconnects the moment you're in range.

Blocked speakers are the other physical cause. Pocket lint packs into the bottom grille over months, slowly enough that there's never a day you notice it got worse. Use a dry, soft toothbrush at an angle. No pins, no compressed air.

One thing worth being blunt about: nothing in a browser, and no app on the App Store or Play Store, can push your phone's output past its hardware maximum. Anything advertising "300% louder speakers" is boosting the file, applying EQ, or lying. What you can do is make the file itself louder, so the same 100% output setting delivers more sound.

When the recording is genuinely quiet

Now the real case. Someone recorded a note holding the phone at their waist on a noisy street, or with a finger over the mic, or just talking softly. Their peak level might sit 20 dB below full scale. On a laptop or a phone speaker that's the difference between clearly audible and "sorry, can you type it".

WhatsApp voice notes are mono Opus files, usually with a .opus or .ogg extension, encoded for speech rather than music. Chrome, Edge and Firefox have decoded Ogg Opus for years, and recent Safari versions handle it too. If an older Safari refuses to load one, open it in Chrome on a desktop instead.

Getting the file out of WhatsApp:

  1. Android: long-press the voice note, tap the share icon, and send it to Files, Drive, or your own email. Or find it directly at Internal storage/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes/ with any file manager.
  2. iPhone: long-press the message, tap Forward or the share sheet, then Save to Files.
  3. Desktop: WhatsApp Web and the desktop app both download a voice note straight to your Downloads folder, which is the fastest route if you're already at a computer.

Boost the file without wrecking it

Drop that file into the browser volume booster and hit Smart Boost. It scans every sample and reports four numbers: sample peak in dBFS, average level (RMS) in dBFS, integrated loudness in LUFS, and headroom in dB. Headroom is the one that matters here. It's how much louder you can go before a sample runs past full scale and clips. The LUFS figure is measured the way streaming platforms measure it, which is handy if you're matching something to -14 LUFS for YouTube or -16 for Apple Podcasts, but for a voice note you can ignore it.

Smart Boost then names the exact percentage that produces zero clipped samples with 1 dB of margin, and applies it in one click. Some reference points, since percentages aren't intuitive:

  • 200% is +6.02 dB, double the amplitude
  • 300% is about +9.5 dB
  • 400% is +12.04 dB
  • 500% is about +14 dB, and that's the ceiling

So a note peaking at -12 dBFS gets a suggestion around 355%. One peaking at -20 dBFS would need roughly 890% to hit the same target, more than the 500% cap can give, and that's where the soft limiter earns its keep. It's on by default: a tanh-knee waveshaper that stays transparent below 0.7 of full scale and bends asymptotically toward full scale above it. Push past the zero-clip number and loud consonants get rounded off instead of squaring into distortion. A live warning also tells you what percentage of the file would run past full scale at the current setting, so you can see the damage before you commit. It's a limiter, not a compressor with attack and release, so it won't pump.

One precise caveat: the peak reading is sample peak, not true peak (dBTP). A reconstructed waveform can overshoot the highest sample by a fraction of a dB in between samples. That 1 dB margin covers ordinary cases; it isn't a broadcast-grade dBTP guarantee.

Boosting a quiet recording raises the room noise with it. If the sender was in a cafe, +12 dB of gain makes the cafe +12 dB louder too, and there's no way around it. These tools do gain, EQ and limiting, not noise removal or voice isolation. If the speech is buried under traffic rather than just quiet, the honest answer is that no volume tool will rescue it. Ask them to re-record somewhere quieter.

Make speech clearer, not just louder

Loudness and intelligibility aren't the same thing. Notes recorded on a phone held at chest height tend to be boomy at the bottom and dull where consonants live. Run the boosted file through the five-band equalizer and try the Voice preset: -4 dB at 60 Hz, -2 dB at 230 Hz, +3 dB at 910 Hz, +5 dB at 3 kHz, +2 dB at 14 kHz. Cutting the bottom two bands removes rumble that eats headroom without carrying any speech, and the 3 kHz lift is the presence region that makes consonants read as distinct rather than mushy.

Resist the urge to run a quiet voice note through the bass booster. Its 120 Hz low shelf is built for music, and on speech it adds exactly the boom you want less of while stealing headroom you need for the words.

Use the level-matched A/B button while you tune. It flips between processed and untouched, and it trims the processed side down to the original's peak first, so you hear the tone change instead of being fooled by "louder always sounds better". That's the difference between an EQ that helps and one that just makes things harsh.

Export is WAV at 16, 24 or 32-bit float, rendered offline faster than real time. There's no MP3 export, so the file you get back is much bigger than the Opus original: a two-minute mono note lands somewhere around 10 to 12 MB at 16-bit, depending on whether your device runs at 44.1 or 48 kHz. Fine for listening, and fine for sending back through WhatsApp as a document.

Video notes and doing this on your phone
