Do volume booster apps actually work?

Some do, most don't, and the split is almost entirely about what the app claims to boost. An app that takes an audio file and applies gain to it can make that file louder, and you can measure the difference in dB. An app that claims to raise your phone's system volume past the hardware maximum is either boosting only its own playback or doing nothing at all, while showing you a slider that goes to 1000%. The second category is crowded, and it's why this question gets asked.

What a "1000% boost" actually means

Percentages of volume are percentages of amplitude. Doubling amplitude is +6.02 dB. So 200% is about +6 dB, 500% is about +14 dB, and 1000% is +20 dB. Real numbers, doing something real to a signal.

On its own the number tells you nothing, because it knows nothing about your file. Digital audio has a hard ceiling at 0 dBFS (full scale). There is no value above it. If your podcast episode already peaks at −1 dBFS, you have exactly 1 dB of room. Ask for +20 dB and 19 of those decibels have nowhere to go: every sample that would have landed above full scale gets flattened to the maximum value. That's clipping, and it sounds like buzzing, crackling, harshness on consonants.

So a "1000% boost" on a loud file gives you 1 dB of extra level and 19 dB of distortion. On a quiet voice memo peaking at −24 dBFS, the same setting is useful and mostly clean. Same app, same button, completely different result. An app that advertises a fixed multiplier without ever measuring your file is advertising a number it can't back up.

This is why the volume booster on this site has a Smart Boost button that scans every sample first and reports the sample peak in dBFS, the RMS level, the integrated loudness in LUFS, and the headroom you actually have. It then names the exact percentage that produces zero clipped samples, leaving 1 dB of margin below full scale. A file peaking at −12 dBFS gets +11 dB, about 355%. A modern master peaking at −0.3 dBFS gets an honest answer under 100%, and you should reach for EQ instead. The LUFS figure lets you compare against the usual targets (−14 LUFS for Spotify and YouTube, −16 for Apple Podcasts) and see the gain that would get you there. You still move the slider. Nothing gets re-mastered behind your back.

Distortion is not loudness. A lot of "it worked!" reviews are describing clipping. Squashing a waveform against full scale adds harmonic junk that our ears read as aggressive and present, so it seems louder for a second before it starts to fatigue you. If a booster sounds instantly dramatic, check whether it's louder or just broken. Careful with headphones, too: perceived loudness roughly doubles per +10 dB, so +20 dB is not "a bit more", it's about four times as loud into your ears.

Can an app make my phone louder?

Not past the hardware limit. This is the part that gets fudged constantly.

On iOS, an app is sandboxed. It cannot set the system volume, it cannot change the amplifier's output stage, and it cannot touch audio another app is playing. Apple doesn't expose an API for it. So an iOS "volume booster" is doing one of three things: boosting audio inside its own player, processing a file you imported, or nothing whatsoever. There is no fourth option. An iPhone app promising a system-wide boost for Spotify, YouTube and phone calls is lying, however many five-star reviews it has.

Android is less black-and-white. The platform has real audio effects, including a loudness enhancer and a system equalizer, and an app holding MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS can attach them to an audio session. Some devices and versions let an effect attach to the global output mix, which is where the "works with any app" claims come from. It's inconsistent. Manufacturers ship their own audio stacks, many block global session attachment, and even where it works you get a handful of dB, not a tenfold increase, because the speaker amp still has a fixed ceiling. Anything past that ceiling comes out as distortion, or the phone's protection circuit pulls the level back down. A phone speaker is a few millimetres across, driven by a small amp with thermal and excursion protection. No software gets around a driver already at its mechanical maximum.

The two-minute test for any booster app

You don't have to take anyone's word for it:

  1. Set your phone's system volume to maximum. Not 90%. Maximum.
  2. Play a track through the app with its boost off. Note how loud it is.
  3. Turn the boost to its highest setting. If it gets louder, the app is applying gain to its own playback. That's real and legitimate, but it only ever works for audio played inside that app.
  4. Background the booster and play something in a different app: YouTube, your podcast player, whatever. If it sounds identical to before you installed anything, the "system-wide" claim is dead. On iOS it always will be.
  5. Turn on airplane mode and repeat step 3. Gain is arithmetic on samples; it has no reason to need a network. If the boost stops working offline, the app is a shell around a server or an ad SDK.

For a file-based tool there's a harder test that takes your ears out of it. Boost a file, export it, load the export back in, and look at the reported peak. If a tool claims +6 dB, the peak should move by close to 6 dB, unless it started near full scale and got limited on the way. A tool that reports before and after numbers is one you can check. A tool that only shows a percentage is asking for trust it hasn't earned.

Are volume booster apps safe?

The audio part is harmless. The business model is where the trouble lives. The free, ad-heavy end of this category runs an interstitial between every action, and some fire a full-screen ad on app resume, so a booster you left running interrupts your own music. That's the mild version. Watch for permission requests that have nothing to do with sound:

  • Accessibility service. A volume app has no business reading your screen or injecting taps. This is the single most abused permission on Android.
  • Notification access. Sometimes justified for lock screen media controls, often not. If the app has no media notification, decline it.
  • Draw over other apps. Used for a floating slider, and also for ad overlays and tap hijacking.
  • Contacts, SMS, precise location, phone state, usage access. None of these have any connection to gain. Uninstall.

RECORD_AUDIO deserves a note. That permission is genuinely required on Android to attach certain audio effects to a session, so a real EQ app may ask for it for honest reasons. It's also exactly the excuse a bad actor would use. The combination that should worry you is the microphone permission plus an app that stops working in airplane mode.

What actually works when something is too quiet

For that second row, the five-band equalizer here uses peaking filters at 60, 230, 910, 3000 and 14000 Hz, Q = 1.0, ±12 dB each. The Voice preset is −4, −2, +3, +5, +2: it cuts rumble and lifts presence. It also has a level-matched A/B button, which trims the processed side back to the original's peak so you hear the tone change instead of just "louder". That's how you avoid fooling yourself. If the problem is thin sound rather than buried dialogue, the bass booster is a low shelf at 120 Hz with up to +12 dB, which is gentler than dragging a whole EQ band around.

What our tools do and do not do

Same rules apply to us. The Increase Volume app on iPhone and the Android version boost audio files up to 200%, apply the same five EQ bands and six genre presets as the website, add a bass control, keep a library of your files with settings saved per track, work offline, and export WAV. Free, with an optional subscription that lifts the export limit.

It cannot raise your system volume. It cannot make Spotify louder. It has no limiter and no level-matched A/B, so the browser tools here are ahead of the app on both. For a one-off file, the web version is the better tool and it costs nothing.

The browser tools have hard edges of their own. Export is WAV only, at 16, 24 or 32-bit float, rendered offline faster than real time. No MP3. Smart Boost measures sample peak, not true peak (dBTP), so an inter-sample overshoot after lossy encoding is still possible at a reading of −1 dBFS. The soft limiter is on by default, and it is a limiter, not a compressor: a tanh knee, transparent below 0.7 of full scale, that never lets the signal past it. And the video volume tool plays your MP4, MOV or WebM with the audio boosted live, then exports the boosted audio as a WAV. It does not re-encode the video. You'd remux the WAV back in with ffmpeg or your editor.

All of it runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there's no server and no account. Load the page, turn off Wi-Fi, and it keeps working. That's the offline test from earlier, applied to us.

So do sound amplifier apps work?

File processors: yes, provably, and you can verify the dB change yourself. In-app players with their own gain stage: yes, inside their own playback, which is a smaller promise than the store listing makes. Android system-effect apps: sometimes, by a few dB, depending on the device. iOS system-wide boosters: never.

The tell is almost always the same. Real tools show you numbers and let you check them. The rest show a slider with a big percentage on it and hope you don't measure anything.
